About Me

How it all started

I received my first Subbuteo set over 50 years ago in 1969. and found It an addictive game. Playing mainly with friends and family in leagues and cup competitions, before joining a local club which in addition allowed me to play in local leagues and tournaments. To be honest I was lucky enough never to be short of an opponent to play, the only solo play I indulged in was to practice certain aspects of my game, in short training. As time went by my love of the game was still great but life sort of got in the way, you know the things I'm talking about here, relationships, work, etc. (I'm sure I'm not alone here), and by 1980 I'd hung up my Subbuteo boots at the tender age of 20.

Later years

By the middle to late 90's I was married, and had 2 lads I still had my original Subbuteo gear, and tried to get my Son's into the game but they were more interested in the FIFA Video game, they had no interest at all in flicking little plastic men around trying to outwit the opposition and scoring goals with a ball which if was life size would be as big as a chest of drawers. So I hung my boots up again and most of the Subbuteo gear was sold.

Today

When Covid struck, I had a little more time on my hands than I'd expected and I missed my football, Once again I renewed my passion for Subbuteo. I managed to pick up a late 60's set up for a very reasonable price, a Display edition that had a pitch included, (which was kindly thrown in by the eBay seller), I built a board to put the pitch on, and started enjoying flicking the little fellows around again. But to play a game one needs rules, so I started on my quest of adapting the Subbuteo rules so that I could play a solo game based on my limited skill rather than bias.

My original rules have changed somewhat since I started playing solo, because the more I played the more I felt that those rules were not a true representation of what I was trying to achieve. Once my fantasy league was up and running, I started writing the rules down and eventually The Bonfire Alliance had its own League and Match Rulebook. I've posted this on the downloads page, it's how I play and administer my Fantasy League for anyone interested. If you want to play the same way be my guest, if you want to adapt or adopt any of my rules you have my blessing, or even throw it out with the garbage the choice is yours. What is important is that you play in a way that you feel gives you the pleasure and enjoyment that I feel my rules now give me.

This time I have no intention of hanging up my Subbuteo boots for a 3rd time.
